Our leak detection process

At Leak Trace, we use a systematic water leak detection process to locate hidden and underground water leaks while avoiding unnecessary digging wherever possible. Every property is different, so we select the most appropriate leak detection methods based on the location of the pipework, the amount of water being lost and the conditions at the property.

Our process combines property assessment, water-loss testing and specialist leak detection equipment to narrow down and pinpoint the source of a leak.
 

1. Before We Arrive

After you book a leak detection inspection, we review any available infrastructure and property information that may help us understand the likely location of underground pipework before arriving.

In most cases, Leak Trace can attend the same day, or within 24 hours, depending on your location and our existing bookings.

This preparation helps us arrive with a better understanding of the property and determine which leak detection methods are most likely to be effective.
 

2. On-Site Leak Assessment

When we arrive, we carry out a detailed inspection of the property and discuss what you have noticed, such as an unusually high water bill, a continuously moving water meter, damp areas, unusual sounds or other signs of a hidden water leak.

We assess the property, visible plumbing infrastructure and likely pipe routes before deciding on the most appropriate way to investigate the leak.

The aim is to narrow the search area before invasive work is considered.
 

3. Calculate How Much Water Is Being Lost

We determine the approximate rate of water loss before beginning detailed leak detection.

During this test, water use at the property is temporarily stopped. Taps, appliances, irrigation systems and toilets need to remain unused so that changes at the water meter can be attributed to the suspected leak rather than normal household water consumption.

Calculating the water-loss rate helps us understand the severity of the leak and can also assist in choosing the most appropriate detection method.
 

4. Locate the Water Leak

Once the initial investigation is complete, we use specialist leak detection equipment to narrow down and locate the source of the water loss.

Depending on the property and type of leak, our equipment and techniques may include:

• Acoustic leak detection and electronic listening equipment to identify sounds created by escaping pressurised water.

• Thermal imaging cameras to identify surface temperature patterns that may indicate some concealed or under-slab water leaks.

• Moisture meters to identify abnormal moisture levels in building materials.

• CCTV drain cameras where inspection of accessible drainage pipework is appropriate.

• Other specialist detection techniques where required by the circumstances.

Rather than simply guessing where the pipe may be leaking, our objective is to progressively narrow the search area and identify the most likely leak location before repair or excavation begins.
 

5. Leak Detection Report and Independent Repair Quotes

Once the leak has been located, we provide you with a clear leak detection report explaining what we found.

Depending on the job, your report may include:

• the identified leak location;

• photographs of the affected area;

• maps or markings showing where the leak was detected;

• the detection methods used;

• relevant observations from the investigation; and

• recommendations for the next step.

Leak Trace specialises in finding water leaks rather than repairing them.

After locating your leak, we can also contact three independent local contractors for repair quotes, which you will typically receive within 24 hours.

There is no obligation to use those contractors. You receive the leak detection information and can also provide it to your own plumber or preferred repairer if you wish.
 

6. Follow-Up Support

Our service does not necessarily end when we leave your property.

We follow up to make sure you have received the repair information or quotes you need and can assist with questions about the leak location or the findings in your report.
